A note on color range

Please expect there to be a color range with this leather. The oils and waxes can take differently due to a number of factors that will cause the color to vary from shipment-to-shipment. You will see the most variation with the English Tan and Natural.

A note on Natural

Think of Natural not as a color, but rather a condition of the leather. Horween applies a wax to the base leather color, and the wax will take differently due to a number of factors (ie. heat and humidity).

The most rustic version of the Essex line, Derby is a vegetable tanned infused with a rich blend of waxes and tumbled to emphasize the natural highs and lows in the leather. This Horween leather is more rugged version than Dublin leather and displays a softer temper. The leather is highly distressed and exhibits a rugged appearance as a result of the tumbling process. Derby exhibits great tonality with a rich pull up and will age beautifully by developing a rich patina.

Essex is a combination of new and old technologies. Essex starts with a modern wet-white pre-tannage and then gets a full vegetable tannage using Horween's old fashioned, time proven Shell Cordovan tanning liquors. Next, an enriched blend of fats, oils and greases are tanned into the leather giving the leather durability, softness and a rich round feel. Available in both earth tones and natural veg colors. The weight ranges are from 3.5oz up to 9oz.

Waxed Flesh Chromexcel is Horween’s version of the old French Waxed Calf.  Horween starts with the Chromexcel base, which is fully vegetable re-tanned and hot stuffed. The flesh side is finished, and the grain side is left untouched. Horween uses its proprietary procedure to hand dye the flesh side. The leather is hand glazed to provide a tight flesh and final luster. WF CXL is commonly used in footwear, specifically boots. ››  WF CXL is considered a “rough out” or “flesh out” leather

Horween Washed Chromexcel starts with the Chromexcel base, which is fully vegetable re-tanned and hot stuffed. After finishing, the leather is then wet back and exposed to heat during the washing process. The exposure to the heat and tumbling allows the leather to achieve a nice tumbling pattern and a duller appearance as compared to our standard Chromexcel.

Horween Cypress is a combination-tanned leather that blends chrome tanning with a heavy vegetable retannage, offering a balance of structure and flexibility. It is initially nourished through a fat liquoring process in the drum, where oils and waxes suspended in water are absorbed into the leather for enhanced depth and feel. Cypress then undergoes a mechanical drying process, resulting in a more compact structure. Its finishing involves staining and applying topical waxes that are ironed into the surface, adding durability and a refined appearance.

Horween LaSalle is produced from our Dearborn base tannage and was designed to create an ultra-soft, rich-feeling leather that is fully vegetable tanned. Using deer skin as a guide, we developed a proprietary vegetable tanning formula to produce this line of leather. The combination of this new formulation with a rich blend of waxes provides LaSalle with a luxurious feel that gets better with age.

Horween's Vermont is a lightweight equine leather known for its medium-soft temper and natural feel. The vegetable tanning process imparts a warm, natural color that develops a rich patina over time. Each hide is mill-dyed with aniline dyes that bring out the natural grain and then vacuum-dried, providing a firm yet pliable structure with a thickness of 2.5-3 oz (1.0-1.2 mm). Vermont receives a slight tumbling that adds depth, resulting in a rich hand feel that highlights the authentic texture and subtle variations of the hide’s surface. Pinnacle is a new development in the horsefront leather line from Horween Leather Company. This leather is designed with a strong and durable base tannage, resulting in a final product that is buttery soft and rich in feel. Pinnacle is combination tanned, using chrome tanning with a vegetable re-tannage. New formulations for this product include a proprietary blend of oils being introduced during the tanning process which provide a rich nourishment of the fibers, giving the leather its strength, durability, and soft feel. The leather is then finished with a blend of waxes and aniline dyes, which highlight the unique grain of the horsehide.

Chromepak is a straight chrome tanned leather where a heavy grease blend is hot stuffed into the leather during the re-tanning process. This combination of soft waxes help make this article pliable.

The combination of heavy grease blends and soft waxes allows this incredibly tough Horween leather to become flexible and water resistant.

A version of this article originated in the early 1900’s as a mechanical leather used to make oil seals. It was used for this purpose as it has superior durability and heat resistance.

Developed in 2021, Montana is characterized by its pebbled shrunken grain and subtle pull-up effect. Montana is combination tanned… chrome tanned base with a heavy vegetable re-tannage. The temper of this Horween leather is soft and pliable.
