Great leather starts with great tanneries.

Boot blog Stridewise.com has released their list of the best tanneries on Earth. Spoiler alert…

The top two picks are Horween and C.F. Stead—leather we are proud to carry at The Tannery Row.

1. Horween Leather Company

The facility that’s synonymous with American leather, Horween is perhaps best known for making the industry’s go-to boot leather, Chromexcel. Combination tanned and rich in oils and waxes, it’s renowned for its luster and its patina, but Horween specializes in many leathers like the vegetable tanned Dublin and some of America’s only Shell Cordovan.

2. Charles F. Stead

Perhaps best known for their suede, “CF Stead” is based in Leeds, England and has a huge roster of clients including Clarks, Adidas, and Dr. Martens. They’re also the best known tannery for producing kudu leather, which is sourced from wild antelope in East Africa.
